Red Steagall - Red River Rose lyrics
In a fenceline north of Estelene, the strangest sight I've ever seen; A note tied with a ribbon to a rollin' tumbleweed. Brazos tossed his head and shied, the weed got caught in a wire. I stepped down from my saddle horse and give that note a read. (Chorus) Lines that were written in a fair woman's hand told of her life and the loss of her man. It's her heart and her hope she has cast in the wind, and it's me that old tumbleweed chose to find Red River Rose. By the time I built a fire that night I'd memorized every line, felt the silent teardrops that had fallen on that note. I heard a lonesome coyote cry and it was then I realized; Rose and this old cowboy had been too long alone. (Chorus) On the north side of the prairie dog in a dugout built of cedar logs stood a woman in a cotton dress the color of the sod. She said the man she loved had died and so, to keep her occupied, she tied notes to the tumbleweeds and trusted them to God. (Chorus) (Bridge) In a cedar cabin 'neath a canyon wall we light a fire and watch the snowflakes fall. I'm glad it's me that old tumbleweed chose to find Red River Rose. |
