Derek Warfield - The Ballad of Michael Barrett lyrics
It was on a bright may morning, in the year of 68, They led young Michael Barrett to the scaffold at Newgate, He was indeed a Fenian but they blamed him in the wrong, They had to have a scapegoat and Michael was the one. He came from north Fermanagh near the county Donegal, And he had lived through the hunger, Michael seen it all, He went away to Glasgow like so many from this land, There he joined up with the Fenian’s to help free Ireland. “We salute young Michael Barrett, a brave Fermanagh man They hanged him outside Newgate jail, he died for Ireland. Taken from his Glasgow home and framed for all to see, We remember Michael Barrett who died for liberty.” The people came that morning; they bowed their heads to pray, As they led young Michael Barrett to the scaffold on that day They wanted him to know they cared; they loved him for his stand, As he walked up to that scaffold to die for Ireland. His broke hearted mother had pleaded for his life, But the evil local landlord decided he should die, For no mercy could be shown to him or to any Irish man Who dared to talk of freedom in this his native land. “We salute young Michael Barrett, a brave Fermanagh man They hanged him outside Newgate jail, he died for Ireland. Taken from his Glasgow home and framed for all to see, We remember Michael Barrett who died for liberty.” Come all ye lads and lassies all who listen to my song Be proud of where you came from and be proud of your own land. And remember Michael Barrett and those who gave their lives Remember all of our heroes who made this sacrifice. For freedom sure is coming and it won’t be very long Before those English Bastards will leave our native land, And it will be good riddance and they know they done us wrong, They murdered men like Barrett, a proud young Irish man. “We salute young Michael Barrett, a brave Fermanagh man They hanged him outside Newgate jail, he died for Ireland. Taken from his Glasgow home and framed for all to see, We remember Michael Barrett who died for liberty.” |
